My intestine is 7.5 mtrs long, what about yours ?

SO I live in a country where all the heads in the room will turn simultaneously towards you only because you uttered the MOST unusual – uncommon word- I am a “Vegetarian”. Yup , I live in Singapore now. Finally found a job, jajajajajajaj (english:hahahahahah) . 😀  Everything is good. Almost everything. Good work place, it’s got a pool table, my new addiction! An exhausting pantry , only one train stop from my house! most importantly one of the best companies ever! BUT, I will go as hungry as an empty car stuck in a dessert with not a single gas station within even 5 kms of radius. It is So hard to find a vegetarian restraunt here. You do ofcourse find dozens in “Little India”-which is a replica of India. But Indian food is by far the only purely vegtarian cuisine you can find here.

So after lunching together, my colleagues and I starting havign a conversation about food and which cuisine was their favorite , which food item was delicious and which animal was mouth-watering tasty!!! At that time I froze to what I was hearing.  They were discussing which parts of the animal meat were tastier than the rest! Apparently in Phillipines, nothing goes to the trash. So they decide to finish up even the BONE marrows! Holy cow!  So then our conversation grew gross-er and I then decided to write something about it that I would like to share. Some SENSE , that is .

Man was always termed as the top of the food chain. Meaning he was “Omnivorous”. So he eats everything from plants to animals. Right? Wrong!  and here is why..

I want to introduce to you some terms that some of you may not be familiar with. So the eating habits are categorized as
1. Herbivores : (Primary food) Equipped to handle raw leaf/ grass  : (animal species) the grazers;Cow, sheep..etc,.
2. Grainivores : Raw grains of various grasses : Birds
3. Frugivores : thrive mostly on raw fruits, succulent fruit-like vegetables, roots, shoots, nuts and seeds : Apes, Gorillas, Chimpanzees, monkeys etc,.
4.Insectivores : thrive on insects : ant-eaters(obviously!), amphibians etc,.
5.Carnivores: eat raw meat : cats, lions, tigers, wolves etc,.
6. Omnivores : Everything from plants to animals.

If you believe in Darwin’s evolution along with many others’ , you should come to a logical conclusion that we may categorize ourselves under the Frugivores ’cause our ancestors are up there. But we have not even seen the term in our Bio text books or even from the lecturers! (bet they love the chicken breast!). But It’s true.

Ill try and eliminate what we are not. We cannot be herbivores cause our intestines are not long enough / can’t digest raw plant fibres like the way cows do. (Have you every noticed cows bringing up their half chewed stuff back up to the mouth to chew them more and then swallow them..ewwww…But yea, it takes that long an intestine and that much chewing , you see!). Nor do we have a long neck to reach up to trees / tall branches.

We cannot be grainevores either ’cause we dont have beaks to break open the nuts/grains.

We cannot be insectivores, (unless you were born south-east Asian).Thankfully, half  (or more?) of the female population freaks out at the sight of roaches and bees!

We are not carnivores ’cause , ok this bit is interesting.

1.Now these guys can run really really fast to catch hold of their preys. We cant.No you can’t even over-take your house cat!
2.They have sharp canines to grab hold of the meat and tear those layers of tissues. And I know some people will quickly want to answer ” Oh we have knives and forks and axes” and stuff. FAIL. You just can’t eat them without any external effort if you were thrown in an island!
3. Their intestine. It’s 3-5 times the length of their body, which is much smaller than our’s (Cows have an intestine roughly 30 times the length of their body!) The reason they have small ones is because if the meat stays in the body too long it becomes toxic. Also carnivores animals produce highly acidic gastric juices in order to  digest the meat faster , effectively and reduce the chances of it intoxicating. I read somewhere that the excreta of cats and the sorts have unbearable smell! yuack thu.
4. They produce enzymes that will eliminate the presence of Uric acid. Since we don’t we tend to absorb them and its as good as storing poison in our body !
5. you know the above 4 should really be enough for you to stop eating animals! The only reason human race started having meat was because some random region in the world faced a famine and we turned to the animals as a source of food.

Do you also realise we have a nice set of fingers to grab hold of fruits and vegtables , apart from your ditcher friend’s neck when they turn up late for a movie!

So when people want to get back at animal rights activists, they ask why do you get offended when we kill animals, you kill plants too. And besides we are not hunting in the forest to catch hold of animals, that you may worry about their extinction. We breed them. well? LAME!  How long do you think you can ‘breed’ animals and kill them to eat. You people are not enough with one turkey sizzler per meal! It takes one male and one female and a couple of months to produce ONE off-spring. Twins are a rare chance. It’s not meant to be. Nature speaks to you, you know? Don’t like that line? clichéd? well, nature is slapping at you the naked truth and common sense. So wake up and stop eating what you are not supposed. Or else…..somebody gonna get a real bad hurt. Oh well, you Die actually! With all weird diseases. Like, the Swine flu. Im sure no muslim died of that! They were smart not to eat Pork, thank God, literally! I mean, seems like human race got tired of getting sick from the usual diseases, so they started picking up diseases from the animals.

So STOP looking at vegetarians with astonishment for not eating meat! grrrrrr…

Hey, Santhoshi, another awesome post… you really have a knack for writing!

I think it is muuuuuch easier being an Indian Vegetarian, because Indian Vege cuisine is by far the best in the world! Especially South Indian cuisine. Sometimes when I get some good Mattar Paneer, or Curry Chawal, or Akis Rasam Rice, I think I could become a permanent vegetarian… but what to do, I am so used to eating fish and rice that eventually I give up and go back to my own vice…

Given the facts you have stated though, maybe I will try to cut down on the fish and chicken and more on the veges and lentils…

cheers!

Fun fact 1: There are more cows than humans. (Some uncle from Google search told me. Lalala)

Fun fact 2: Swine flu is an airborne disease. You do not get swine flu from eating pork/pork-based food.

Fun Fact 3: Samah Al Sayyed, 25, Nile Delta hospital. Muslim. Died because of swine flu.

We cannot be insectivores, (unless you were born south-east Asian). Super Lol!!!
Good post. Really. You write well, Santho. Love u tons!!!!!!

Great stuff Santoshi..really enjoyed your writing style..I am a die hard vegetarian myself and fully agree with your views..according to me Thayir Saadam (Curd rice) is the most simple, nourishing natural coolant for our body and I am scared that like other instances earlier, some western country may patent it sooner than later as their concoction..

Erm…

First of all, why do Vegetarians ( oh yes, with the capital V) have this compulsory need to rabidly preach the good that comes from being a veggie ?

We ever tried enticing you with the aromas and flavours of various kebabs?

Let us be no?

“Many vegetarians argue that their lifestyle makes them healthier than those who eat meat. Although we certainly won’t discredit the many benefits of a vegetarian diet, there’s reason to believe that a well-balanced omnivorous diet is a far healthier choice. Studies have repeatedly shown that vegetarians who fail to supplement their diets with Vitamin D, B12 and iron are prone to becoming dangerously anemic. Vegetarians also typically miss out on omega-3 fatty acids. These unsaturated acids have been proved to slow the progression of atherosclerosis, reduce triglyceride levels, act as anti-inflammatory agents, and potentially help with depression and some personality disorders.

Researchers at Oxford University recently followed 35,000 individuals aged 20 to 89 for a period of five years and discovered that vegans are 30% more likely to break a bone than their vegetarian and flesh-eating peers. A subsequent study conducted by Sydney’s Garvan Institute for Medical Research found that vegetarians had bones 5% less dense than meat-eaters. This can be attributed to the fact that many vegetarians and vegans consume very little calcium due to the limitations of their diet.”

I can do what you can tooo 😛

As long as we are considerate enough to switch to a vegetarian dinner when our dates’ are vegetarian and make sure you’re out of earshot when we are munching our way through tender and crisp &tm; chicken , I think we should be left alone!

Santshiiiii…go girl!! Go vegetarian Go! @ Smriti : She would technically be a non vegetarian . coz Chicken biryaani (as told to me by kalyan) is cooked by soaking chicken in milk (and some stuff) for a day long so they can extract the juices of it. That is used as a broth to cook the rice..along with that chicken pieces are used in it. So technically, she is having rice cooked out of chicken broth, not entirely water.

@ Pradeep :
“Anthropoligists have tried to calculate the nutritional value of human flesh. One estimate suggests that a corpse provides slightly more than 100 grams of protein per kp of body weight, assuming 40% of body weight is wasted in the butcherign process.By this estimate, a fifty-kg (110 pound) adult corpse might yeild 5000 grams of protein. The liver and heart are rich in iron, bone meal is a good source of calcium. The wild honey with which the bone meal was mixed tends to be rich in vitamins, which would enhance calcium absorption.” – Consuming greipf: Compassionate cannibalism in an Amazonian society

I’d like to see how many people would dare to start eating human flesh as their main course with full acceptance just because we are rich in protein , iron and calcium! And also human flesh taken with corn apparently is good cause they complement their amino acids. And about Vitamin D, Sun is the richest source of Vitamin D. Go out for a walk and you have it all. As for B12, yes there have not been and rich source of B12 which is veg. At the same time..scientists say that vitamins/minerals can be stored in a human body for a Minimum of atleast 20 years. So if you really want B12, go ahead and eat your vitamin tablets. I guess you can enjoy that much of scientific technology 🙂

Everything is out there in the world. Same energy in different forms. we have to choose what is right for us based on how our body is built not based on acquired taste .

I went to read up on diet and evolution and it seems our ancestor went through different phases of dietary changes due to environmental, lifestyle and technological change.

Our ancient primate forefathers probably follow the diet of the other primate which is made up of >90 % fruits and vegetables, with the remaining being insects. and other small grubs (yuck!)

Then somewhere along the evolutionary journey, some guy decide to kill some poor creature and start eating it and it seems the introduction of animal meat into the diet increase the intake of calories, which might be the necessary requirement for our increasing brain usage. Though the difficulty in hunting comparing to gathering still means that our diet remain mainly nuts and fruits.

Then with our agriculture revolution about 10,000 years ago, our diet has once again changed with a fruit/vegetable dominant diet to a grain dominant diet. There is a differences in the diet because grain fiber is insoluble while fruit fiber is. What is the implication, I am not sure… I have to find out more.

Now, with industralization, our diet has changed again to become meat dominant because our somehow obsession with juicy meat and gourmet lifestyle. This have actually lead to a lot of chronic diseases surfacing. Cancer is one of the most common disease now and 1 out of 5 ( rough number and might differ with country) is going to develop cancer. From my reading, i attribute this to our decadent diet. Animal and plant protein is very much different in that animal protein is much harder to digest and adsorb. Our imbalanced amount of animal intake has cause severe stress on our digestive system and I am not surprised by colon cancer is the number one cancer in our country. There are also many other factor like our increase intake of sodium in comparison to our potassium intake. Our cell chemistry is actually more potassium based then sodium based and our dependency on salt to flavour our food and upset this balance.

Actually I am not a proponent of any diet. I believe people can eat meat as long it is in moderation. The ratio i believe in is 80/20 with 80 being fruits vegetable and grain. Whatever diet you want to eat, just be watchful of your nutrient intake. Even if you are a vegetarian, your nutrient intake might also be unbalanced. Start be responsible of your own health and not wait until it is too late, when your friendly neighbourhood doctor tell you u have a chronic disease.

What is wrong with you fucking Vegetarians! What is so horrible about eating some tasty cooked meat. You should really get a life and try the food that actually tastes good instead of eating veggies all the time. If Humans ever ate animals or used the resources from them like there skin and there horns Humans would be extinct all friggen ready.

  Jason wrote @

so you claimed that humans cannot be carnivores, of course thats even socially unacceptable (everyone knows you gotta have some veggies!) sooooo…..if theres also problems with frugitarian or whatever….cant we agree on herbivoreism, just the balance is all wrong in this day and age.

  Jason wrote @

lol sorryyy i meant cant we be omnivores, thats awkward…

vegetarianism makes me a little slow sometimes…. 😛
